Braided Circle Rug Jan. 2008

I made this from scraps of different fabrics. I sewed 3 strips about 1-2" wide into a 42 ft. rope! then I sewed the braids together in a circle. All together it took about 5 hours, and the rug is about 22" wide. I love it!

Scrap Rug

I made this out of an old skirt and blouse, with used drapery fabric for the backing.

First step: Tear the clothes into 3" x 1" strips.
Second step: Cut out a rectangle of old embroidered drapery fabric and folded over the edges for a clean look.
Third step: Sew the strips in alternating colors in a straight line one by one.

The whole progect took about 2 hours. It's very soft and thanks to the thick embroidred material it doesn't slide much. Next time I want to make one out of sweater fabric so it will be extra cushy!

NICOLE YOST : ASTA ARTS, aka kick ass rubber stamps!

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
LARA: I am inspired by materials, colors, shapes, all things natural, and all things weird. I often choose color combos because I see one fabric lying on top of the other. I take walks and see interesting plants or strange objects discarded on the street and find the shapes or textures interesting. I like juxtaposing unexpected patterns or materials just to see what happens. I often work like a mad scientist, throwing together things just to see what will happen (incidentally I have a lot of failed experiments lying around)

WOW, this is some awesome art! Her name is Ricki Mountain and she has been showing her art for years in galleries. I love all the colors and I am especially fond of the collage pieces.

I made this bag from an old tank top. It has a magnetic snap closure on the sides(arm holes) . it really holds a lot of stuff, including my little purse, books, movies, and a small compact unbrella! I just love to design using unwanted materials!

RECYCLED BAGS
New bags, in honor of Earth day, I recycled the fabric!

Here are 2 new bags, I used material that was unwanted.

The Purple Antique bag was made from drapery material, then beaded and finally a heart charm I got from somebodies necklace!

The Blue Skull bag was made from a old t-shirt, with a butterfly and some random embroidery lines for color. The handles are detachable, just untie and throw in the washer!

Both bags have magnetic snap closures.

I would love some feedback! Has anybody else made something out of unwanted materials?

Noir Blanc
A lot of great things are Black and White…salt and pepper, tuxedos, the daily newspaper and old movies. In my hometown we have a small movie theater that was built in the early 1900’s. It’s been fully restored to its original splendor and each weekend they run an old black and white film. Those old films inspired “Noir Blanc” when stars were really stars and everything glamorous was in black and white. Each of the papers have the colors reversed on the back.

this line is my favorite...very comforting. Westminster is the name...the first paper is cathedral window...my favorite. reminds me of a stained glass window.

I find inpiration by looking a colors, patterns, fashion, fabric, music and poetry. I love old vintage photos. Going to antique shops and thinking about how each piece you find has a story of it's own is inspiring to me.

Designer Lisa Fortin has been creating jewelry and accessories from within New York City's most progressive neighborhoods for nearly 10 years. She recently relocated from the burgeoning art community of Bushwick to Williamsburg, Brooklyn's well-established heart of music, art, and fashion.

Steel Couture is what happens when rigid materials such as steel, brass, 14K gold, and sterling silver are manipulated to create soft and feminine shapes. Each piece reflects Lisa's innovative styling, intricate attention to detail, and rock-n-roll aesthetic. Distinctive findings keep her work fresh and unique.

Lisa got her start in 1997 designing costumes made from chainmail, the intricately woven armor traditionally used on medieval battlefields. Shakespearean actors, fire dancers, and aspiring rock stars have all donned Lisa's custom costumes.

A dedicated artisan and entrepreneur, Lisa began exploring other mediums that are similar to chainmail in their construction, such as knitting, crocheting, and weaving with wire. Her first jewelry was designed with the intention of making her work more accessible. The premier Steel Couture collection developed an immediate following and was carried in fashionable boutiques around New York.

In subsequent years, Steel Couture was featured in Daily Candy, Lucky, and Nylon, and the line is now distributed at boutiques nationwide. Brooklyn's creative fashion scene and industrial surroundings serve as constant inspiration.

In the summer of 2007, Lisa and her husband, a watchmaker, opened a storefront in the heart of Williamsburg, where watches are serviced and emerging designers are debuted. They live behind the shop in a garden apartment with their toddling daughter, Clara Fae.
